Brushed aluminum sheet is an aluminum flat-rolled product with a controlled directional or textured grain created on the metal surface. The brushing process gives the aluminum a distinctive matte metallic appearance while reducing the mirror-like reflection of an untreated or polished surface.

Brushed aluminum is also commonly searched as brushed aluminium sheet, hairline aluminum sheet, brushed finish aluminum or decorative brushed aluminum. These terms can describe similar products, but the actual material should always be defined by alloy, temper, thickness, grain direction, surface treatment, color, protective film and finished dimensions rather than by appearance name alone.
Brushed aluminum is produced by mechanically treating the aluminum surface with controlled abrasive contact. The process creates fine visible lines or a defined texture on the surface instead of the smooth rolled appearance of ordinary mill finish aluminum.
The grain may be fine or relatively pronounced depending on the abrasive, brushing direction, processing speed and required visual standard. For appearance-critical products, a physical sample is normally more useful than specifying only terms such as “brushed”, “hairline” or “satin”, because these names can describe different texture levels between suppliers.
Brushing changes the visual character of the aluminum surface, but it should not be confused with a protective coating. A mechanically brushed surface can subsequently be anodized, clear protected or combined with another specified finishing system when additional corrosion resistance, color stability or handling protection is required.
Brushed Aluminum Sheet: Cut sheets are suitable for applications where the customer needs defined length, flat panels and convenient downstream fabrication. Typical uses include appliance panels, interior decorative panels, signage, furniture components, equipment covers and fabricated parts.
Brushed Aluminum Coil: Coil is suitable for continuous or higher-volume manufacturing. It can be used for roll forming, stamping, panel production, slitting or subsequent cut-to-length processing. Grain direction should be confirmed before production because it affects the appearance of finished parts cut from the coil.
Cut-to-Size Brushed Aluminum: For OEM production, aluminum can be cut according to finished width and length requirements. When the final component has a visible grain, the drawing should indicate which direction the brush lines must run after cutting and forming.
Straight / Linear Brush: Fine parallel lines run consistently in one direction. This is one of the most widely used brushed aluminum finishes for decorative panels, appliance surfaces, signage and interior products.
Hairline Finish: Hairline aluminum generally refers to a finer and more closely controlled linear brushed appearance. It is often selected where the customer wants a refined metallic surface without the strong reflection of mirror aluminum.
Long-Line and Short-Line Finish: The visible length and continuity of the brush pattern can be adjusted according to the required sample and production method. The selected pattern should be approved before mass production for projects where several panels are installed next to each other.
Cross or Decorative Brushed Texture: Non-standard or multi-directional textures can be evaluated according to a reference sample. Availability depends on material thickness, coil width, order quantity and required finishing process.
Natural Silver Brushed Aluminum: The aluminum is mechanically brushed to create the required metallic grain while maintaining a natural silver appearance. Because bare brushed aluminum remains an exposed metal surface, handling, storage and final service environment should be considered carefully.
Brushed Anodized Aluminum Sheet: For this finish, the required brushed texture is created before anodizing. The anodic oxide layer can improve surface protection while preserving the visual grain underneath. Silver, champagne, gold, bronze, black and other decorative appearances can be discussed according to the anodizing specification and approved sample.

Colored Brushed Aluminum: Decorative color can be produced through different finishing routes depending on the target appearance and use. The purchasing specification should therefore state whether the buyer requires colored anodized aluminum, a coated brushed surface or another decorative finish rather than requesting only “gold brushed aluminum” or “black brushed aluminum”.
Color names are not a complete appearance standard. Champagne, bronze, gold, rose gold, black and other metallic colors can vary according to alloy, finishing process, gloss level and production batch. For decorative projects, Worthwill recommends approval against a physical color and grain sample.
Brushed Aluminum: Has visible directional or decorative grain and a comparatively soft metallic reflection. It is selected mainly where surface appearance forms part of the finished product design.

Mill Finish Aluminum: Retains the natural surface produced during rolling and does not intentionally receive a decorative brushed pattern. Mill finish is normally selected when surface decoration is not the main requirement or when the material will receive additional downstream treatment.

1050 / 1060 Brushed Aluminum: Commercially pure aluminum grades with good formability and a clean metallic appearance. They are commonly considered for decorative components, signs, nameplates, lighting-related parts and applications where high structural strength is not the main requirement.
1100 Brushed Aluminum Sheet: A widely used commercially pure aluminum option with good forming performance. It is suitable for many decorative and fabricated products where the appearance of the brushed surface is more important than high mechanical strength.
3003 Brushed Aluminum: Offers greater strength than commercially pure 1000-series aluminum while maintaining good workability and corrosion resistance. It is commonly evaluated for appliance panels, decorative sheet products and general fabricated components.
5005 Brushed Aluminum: 5005 is often selected for decorative aluminum products, particularly when a consistent anodized appearance is important. Final suitability should be confirmed according to anodizing color, surface quality and forming requirements.
5052 Brushed Aluminum Sheet: Provides higher strength than 1000- and 3000-series decorative grades and offers good corrosion resistance. It can be considered for more demanding fabricated products, equipment panels, transportation trim and decorative components where additional mechanical performance is required.
The alloy should not be selected from appearance alone. Forming method, bend radius, required strength, anodizing response, welding, environment and downstream fabrication all affect the correct material choice.
Interior Decoration: Wall panels, ceiling details, decorative trims, partitions, door components and other visible architectural elements where a controlled metallic grain is required.
Elevator and Building Interior Panels: Brushed aluminum can provide a clean directional metallic appearance for interior panel systems, elevator decoration and related fabricated components. The required alloy, thickness, grain direction and protective finish should be specified according to the final installation.
Household Appliances: Refrigerator panels, range hood components, appliance trim, control panels and decorative covers where lightweight aluminum and a metallic appearance are required.
Signage and Nameplates: Company signs, identification plates, equipment labels, display panels and decorative branding components. Brushed silver, gold and other metallic finishes can be selected according to the visual design.
Furniture and Cabinet Components: Decorative panels, cabinet faces, furniture trims and other visible metal parts where consistent surface grain is important.

Unlike an ordinary mill finish sheet, brushed aluminum has an obvious visual direction. If several panels or fabricated parts are installed together, inconsistent grain direction can be immediately visible even when all pieces come from the same material batch.
For cut-to-size production, drawings should indicate the required grain direction relative to the finished length and width. For example, the brushing may need to run parallel to the long edge of a panel rather than the short edge.

Brushed aluminum is an appearance-sensitive product. A removable protective film can be applied when required to help reduce scratches, fingerprints and handling marks during cutting, fabrication, packing and transportation.
The required film should be confirmed according to the surface finish and downstream process. Buyers should state whether the protective film needs to remain on the material during cutting, bending or installation and when it will be removed.
For decorative projects, the protective film should not be treated as a substitute for correct handling. Finished sheets should still be kept clean, dry and separated from abrasive materials during storage and fabrication.
Surface Grain: Check whether the direction, density and visual appearance of the brushing are consistent with the agreed sample.
Color Consistency: For anodized or colored products, compare appearance within the agreed batch and against the approved reference sample where required.
Surface Defects: Inspect appearance-sensitive faces for obvious scratches, dents, stains, roll marks or other defects outside the agreed acceptance standard.
Thickness and Dimensions: Verify material thickness, width and cut length according to the purchase specification and applicable tolerance requirements.
Grain Orientation: For cut sheets and fabricated blanks, check that the brushing direction matches the approved drawing or purchase order.
Protective Film: Confirm that the required face is protected and that the film remains intact through packing and transportation.

What is the difference between brushed aluminum and hairline aluminum?
Hairline aluminum is generally a type of brushed aluminum with a fine, closely controlled linear grain. “Brushed aluminum” is the broader term and can include hairline, long-line, short-line and other decorative textures. A sample should be approved when the exact appearance is important.
Is brushed aluminum the same as anodized aluminum?
No. Brushing is a mechanical surface treatment that creates visible grain. Anodizing is an electrochemical process that forms an oxide layer on the aluminum. A product can be both brushed and anodized when the surface is brushed first and then anodized.
Which alloy is best for brushed aluminum sheet?
There is no single best alloy for every application. 1050, 1060 and 1100 are suitable for many decorative and highly formable products; 3003 provides additional strength; 5005 is commonly considered for decorative anodizing; and 5052 is useful where higher mechanical performance and corrosion resistance are required.
Can you supply brushed aluminum coil as well as sheet?

Can brushed aluminum be used outdoors?
The answer depends on the complete material specification. Brushing alone is not an outdoor protective coating. Alloy, anodizing or coating system, environmental exposure, installation design and required service life should be considered together when the material will be used outdoors.
Does brushed aluminum resist fingerprints and scratches?
The directional grain can make some minor handling marks less visually noticeable than on highly reflective metal, but ordinary brushed aluminum should not be described as fingerprint-proof or scratch-proof. If these properties are important, specify the required protective finish and approve a sample before production.
Can the brushing direction be customized?
Yes. Grain orientation can be controlled according to the sheet dimensions and final component design. For cut-to-size projects, mark the required brushing direction on the drawing.
Is protective film available?
Yes. Removable protective film can be supplied according to the surface and fabrication requirement to help protect appearance-sensitive faces during handling, processing and transportation.
Can I approve a brushed finish sample before placing a bulk order?
