Introduction

Aluminum Channel Letter Strip & Coil for 3D Sign Returns

Aluminum channel letter strip is narrow prefinished aluminum supplied in roll form for making the sidewalls, commonly called returns, of three-dimensional channel letters. Buyers may also search for this material as aluminum channel letter coil, channel letter return coil, aluminum return coil or aluminum coil for channel letters.

Henan Worthwill Industry Co., Ltd. supplies channel letter aluminum strip in 1050 and 1060 alloys with H14, H16 and H24 tempers. The material can be supplied with flat edge or trim cap edge, multiple front-side colors and an epoxy matte white back side. Width, thickness, edge configuration and roll format should be matched to the finished letter design and the customer's forming or bending process.

What Is Aluminum Channel Letter Coil?

A channel letter is a three-dimensional sign in which the perimeter of the letter has a visible depth. The narrow metal running around that perimeter forms the sidewall or return. Aluminum channel letter coil is supplied at a controlled width so it can be cut, notched, bent and formed around the shape of the finished letter.

Unlike general-purpose aluminum strip, channel letter coil is selected around sign-making requirements such as return depth, bending method, edge configuration, visible color and roll length. This is why a broad industrial aluminum-strip specification should not be used as the purchasing standard for this product.

For buyers who require general industrial strip rather than dedicated sign material, see our Aluminum Strip page.

1050 and 1060 Aluminum for Channel Letter Fabrication

Worthwill's standard channel letter strip specification uses 1050 and 1060 aluminum. Both are commercially pure 1xxx-series aluminum grades with good formability, making them suitable for narrow strip that needs to be bent into letters, logos and curved sign profiles.

1050 and 1060 should not automatically be treated as identical. The correct grade should follow the confirmed purchasing specification, temper, thickness, forming method and required finished shape.

For more information about the base alloys, see our 1050 Mill Finish Aluminum and 1060 Mill Finish Aluminum pages.

H14, H16 and H24 Tempers

The standard temper options for this product are H14, H16 and H24. Temper affects the balance between stiffness, shape retention and formability during bending.

The correct temper should therefore be considered together with strip thickness, return width, letter size, bend radius and forming equipment. A harder specification is not automatically better, especially when the design contains small radii or complex letter shapes.

Special tempers can be discussed when the standard H14, H16 or H24 options do not match the customer's fabrication process.

How to Choose Thickness

Worthwill channel letter strip is available from 0.3 to 1.5 mm thick.

Thickness should be selected according to the size of the finished channel letter, return depth, required stiffness, edge configuration and the capability of the bending equipment. A thicker strip can provide greater rigidity, but it also requires more forming force. A thinner strip is easier to form but may not provide the stiffness required by every sign design.

If the material will be processed on an automatic channel letter bending machine, confirm the machine's permitted material thickness before placing the order.

Standard and Custom Widths

Standard widths are 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100 and 120 mm.

The strip width is closely related to the required depth of the channel letter return. However, the nominal return depth should not be used as the only ordering value when the edge profile or fabrication method requires an additional allowance.

Other widths can be supplied on special order. Minimum order requirements may apply to non-standard widths, so the required width and quantity should be confirmed together.

50 m, 100 m and Jumbo Roll Supply

Standard supply formats include 50 m rolls, 100 m rolls and jumbo rolls. Other roll lengths can also be discussed for specific orders.

Shorter rolls can be practical for sign shops handling different colors, dimensions or project batches, while larger rolls can reduce roll changes during continuous production. The preferred format should be selected according to material handling, storage and production equipment.

Flat Edge vs Trim Cap Edge

Worthwill supplies both flat edge and trim cap edge channel letter strip.

Flat Edge: A plain edge format suitable for channel letter fabrication processes that do not require the specified trim-cap edge configuration.

Trim Cap Edge: An edge configuration intended for trim-cap style channel letter fabrication.

The edge type should be stated clearly on the inquiry because it affects how the strip interfaces with the letter face, forming process and bending equipment. Do not order simply by width and color when the finished sign requires a specific edge construction.

Front-Side Colors and Decorative Finishes

Available front-side options include black, white, blue and red, together with decorative metallic finishes such as golden mirror, golden brushed and silver brushed. Other confirmed colors or finishes can be discussed according to the order.

For projects where appearance consistency is important, the required color or finish should be confirmed before bulk production rather than selected only from a screen image. Metallic, brushed and mirror appearances can look different under different lighting conditions.

Worthwill also manufactures broader Color Coated Aluminum Coil & Sheet for signage, architectural and industrial applications.

Epoxy Matte White Back Side

The standard back-side finish for this channel letter strip is epoxy matte white.

Because the front and back surfaces serve different functions in the finished sign, buyers should identify the required visible side when sending samples or approving a color. If a project has a special back-side requirement, it should be stated separately before production.

Channel Letter Bending Machine Compatibility

Channel letter coil may be processed manually or with channel letter bending equipment, but machine compatibility should never be assumed from the product name alone.

Before ordering for automatic production, provide the bending-machine model together with the required material thickness, width and edge type. The allowable feeding width, thickness range and edge geometry of the machine should be checked against the strip specification.

This is particularly important for CNC channel letter bending machines, where consistent feeding depends on matching the coil format to the equipment rather than simply buying the closest available roll.

Typical Applications

Aluminum channel letter strip is used primarily for the sidewalls and returns of three-dimensional signage.

Typical applications include illuminated channel letters, storefront lettering, commercial logos, building signs, indoor and outdoor advertising signs and other dimensional sign systems where narrow colored aluminum needs to be formed around a letter or logo profile.

The appropriate alloy, temper, thickness, width, edge type and finish should be selected according to the actual construction of the finished sign.

Why the Edge and Width Matter

Channel letter fabrication involves continuous feeding and repeated bending along the perimeter of a letter. Width consistency and suitable edge condition therefore matter directly to downstream fabrication.

The buyer should specify whether flat edge or trim cap edge is required and should confirm any important dimensional tolerance or bending-machine limitation before production. For non-standard designs, a drawing, sample or machine specification can help avoid ordering the correct alloy but the wrong strip format.

Quality Control for Channel Letter Strip

Inspection for channel letter aluminum strip can cover alloy and temper, strip thickness, width, roll length, edge type, front-side color or finish, back-side coating, surface appearance and packing according to the confirmed purchase specification.

For decorative surfaces, attention should also be given to scratches, edge damage and visible finish consistency. Where color or surface appearance is critical, an approved reference sample can be used before bulk production.

What Information Should You Send for a Quote?

For an accurate quotation, send the required alloy and temper, thickness, width, roll length, edge type, front-side color or finish, quantity and final channel letter application.

If an automatic bending machine will be used, also send the machine model or its permitted material thickness and width range. For special widths, special tempers or non-standard roll lengths, state the complete requirement so minimum quantity and production feasibility can be confirmed together.
