6061 aluminum is a heat-treatable 6xxx-series alloy containing magnesium and silicon as its principal alloying elements. It is widely selected for structural fabrication, CNC machining and industrial components because it combines useful strength with good corrosion resistance, weldability and machining performance.
Worthwill supplies 6061 mill finish aluminum in sheet, plate and selected coil forms. For most buyers, the important decision is choosing the correct temper and product form. A 6061-T6 sheet intended for machining has different forming characteristics from annealed 6061-O sheet, while 6061-T651 plate is often preferred for components that require substantial material removal.
Mill finish refers to the natural surface of aluminum after rolling, without an applied paint, anodized layer or decorative coating. Its appearance may include light rolling lines and normal surface variations. Mill finish does not mean mirror-polished or scratch-free aluminum.
6061 aluminum can be supplied in different heat-treatment conditions to suit fabrication requirements. Its magnesium-silicon alloy system makes precipitation hardening possible, unlike non-heat-treatable alloys such as 3003 and 5052.
For general fabrication, mill finish 6061 can be used as supplied or processed further by machining, brushing, polishing or anodizing. Surface appearance and protection requirements should be agreed before production when the finished part will remain visible.
The following specifications describe Worthwill's published overall dimensional range. Actual availability must be confirmed for the chosen product form, temper and order quantity.

The stated thickness range is not a coil specification. Thin-gauge coil, rolled sheet and heavy plate have different production limits. Very thick material, T651 plate and unusual dimensional combinations require individual availability confirmation.
Temper affects the strength, formability and machining behavior of 6061 aluminum. Buyers should specify the full alloy-temper designation rather than ordering simply “6061 aluminum.”
| Temper | Condition | Typical selection |
|---|---|---|
| 6061-O | Annealed | Bending, forming and fabrication requiring high ductility |
| 6061-T4 | Solution heat-treated and naturally aged | Parts requiring better formability than T6 |
| 6061-T6 | Solution heat-treated and artificially aged | Machined parts, structural components and general engineering |
| 6061-T651 | T6 condition with stress relief by stretching | Machined plate, tooling plates, fixtures and precision components |
| 6061-F | As fabricated | Applications where properties are agreed for the delivered condition |
6061-T6 is a common choice for structural and machined components. Artificial aging provides higher strength than the O and T4 conditions. It is suitable for drilling, milling and other machining operations, but tight-radius bending can cause cracking.
6061-T651 is stress-relieved by controlled stretching after solution heat treatment. This helps reduce residual stress and the risk of movement during machining, particularly when material is removed from one side of a thick plate.
T651 does not automatically guarantee precision flatness or freedom from distortion. Machining sequence, plate thickness, clamping and the specified flatness tolerance still matter.
6061-O is suitable when forming is the main requirement. T4 offers a useful intermediate condition when a component needs more forming capability than T6. Final strength requirements and any later heat treatment should be reviewed before production.
The following composition limits are representative of AA 6061 wrought aluminum alloy, expressed as weight percentages.
| Element | Composition (%) |
|---|---|
| Silicon (Si) | 0.40–0.80 |
| Magnesium (Mg) | 0.80–1.20 |
| Copper (Cu) | 0.15–0.40 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 0.04–0.35 |
| Iron (Fe) | ≤0.70 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤0.15 |
| Zinc (Zn) | ≤0.25 |
| Titanium (Ti) | ≤0.15 |
| Other elements, each | ≤0.05 |
| Other elements, total | ≤0.15 |
| Aluminum (Al) | Balance |
Magnesium and silicon contribute to the heat-treatment response of 6061. The material certificate should be used to verify the composition of a specific production batch.
6061-T6 and T651 provide higher strength than the annealed condition. The values below are typical published reference values, not guaranteed minimum properties for every sheet or plate thickness.
| Temper | Typical tensile strength | Typical yield strength | Typical elongation |
|---|---|---|---|
| T451 | 241 MPa | 145 MPa | 25% |
| T6 / T651 | 310 MPa | 276 MPa | 17% |
These values are based on representative test specimens. Specified minimum mechanical properties depend on thickness, product form, testing direction and the applicable material standard.
Other typical physical properties include:
Density: approximately 2.70 g/cm³.
Modulus of elasticity: approximately 68.3 GPa.
Thermal conductivity: approximately 167 W/(m·K) for T6/T651 at 20°C.
Brinell hardness: approximately 95 HB for T6/T651.
Mechanical properties after welding or additional heat treatment should not be assumed to remain identical to those of the original supplied temper.
6061-T6 and T651 are widely used for milled plates, machine bases, brackets, fixtures and industrial components. Tool selection, coolant, cutting strategy and remaining wall thickness affect the final dimensional stability and surface finish.
For heavily machined parts, T651 plate may help reduce distortion compared with material that has not been stress-relieved. If the finished part requires tight flatness, confirm the machining allowance and inspection requirements.
6061-O offers good formability, while T4 can be useful for parts that need bending before final strengthening. T6 is less forgiving during cold bending. Minimum bend radius depends on thickness, grain direction and forming method.
6061 can be welded using suitable MIG or TIG procedures. However, welding can reduce strength in the heat-affected zone of T6 material. Welded structural components must be designed using the appropriate post-weld properties and qualified procedures where required.
6061 responds well to anodizing and can also be brushed, polished or otherwise finished. The final appearance depends on surface preparation, alloy condition and the finishing process. Buyers requiring a consistent decorative appearance should approve a finished sample before bulk production.
6061 is commonly selected for parts where strength, relatively low weight and machining performance are more important than deep drawing or tight-radius forming.
CNC-machined components: Machine bases, mounting plates, brackets, robotic fixtures and equipment parts.
Transportation equipment: Vehicle structures, chassis components, support brackets and machined transportation parts.
Industrial tooling: Jigs, fixtures, prototype components and manufacturing equipment plates.
Electrical and electronic equipment: Housings, mounting structures and thermal-management components where the overall design supports their use.
Marine and outdoor equipment: Structural fittings, equipment supports and fabricated parts with appropriate corrosion-control measures.
Aerospace, pressure-containing and safety-critical applications require the specified material grade, applicable product standard, traceability and engineering approval. A general-purpose 6061 plate should not be represented as aerospace-certified solely because it uses alloy 6061.
| Alloy | Main characteristics | Better suited to |
|---|---|---|
| 6061 | Heat-treatable, good strength and machining performance | Structural and CNC-machined components |
| 5052 | Non-heat-treatable, excellent sheet formability and strong resistance to marine corrosion | Bent sheet-metal parts, tanks and marine-related fabrication |
| 6063 | Heat-treatable alloy commonly selected for extrusion and decorative anodizing | Architectural profiles, frames and extruded components |
For a part requiring substantial CNC machining, 6061-T6 or T651 is often a practical starting point. If the part requires tight bends or demanding marine exposure, consider 5052 aluminum sheet. For complex extruded profiles with visible anodized surfaces, 6063 may be more suitable.

Both are artificially aged conditions, but T651 also undergoes stress relief by stretching. T651 is commonly selected for machining plate where residual stress and dimensional movement are important considerations.
Yes, but the temper matters. O and T4 conditions are more formable than T6. Tight-radius bending of T6 material can cause cracking, so the bend radius and grain direction should be checked.
Yes. Suitable welding processes can be used, but the heat-affected zone generally loses some of the original T6 strength. Structural design must account for the resulting joint properties.
Yes. 6061 generally responds well to anodizing. If the appearance is critical, specify the surface requirements and approve a finished sample.
Selected 6061 coil products may be supplied, subject to gauge, width, temper and production availability. Heavy plate thicknesses are not available as conventional coil.
No. ASTM B209/B209M is a relevant specification for aluminum sheet and plate, but conformity must be established for the ordered material and supported by appropriate inspection documentation. Specialized AMS requirements must be confirmed separately.
